Record turnout for the first Follies of 2025 this past Friday! 28 club members and a couple guests joined in on a casual discussion for how to stay comfortable and safe while fly fishing during the winter.

Two tips rose to the top:

FLOOR MATS – Club members who fish from a watercraft during colder months reported lining the bottom of their boats with floor mats. Typically available in 12-inch by 12-inch interlocking squares, you can choose the total surface area you decide to cover. Most common in the waffle style you often see in locker rooms or restaurants, or the solid variety used for workstations, this hack keeps your feet out of any standing water in the bottom of the boat while preventing contact between your boots and the bottom of the boat itself (which is often freezing during winter months). This cold can easily radiate up into your boots. The waffle variety, in particular, is also great for providing airflow and quicker drying.

COVERING FOR NECK AND WRISTS – One of our members brought up an interesting point when trying to stay warm in colder temps and that’s body coverage on two specific and oft neglected points. Most of us are diligent with hats, fleece, and coats during the winter. But those items often fall short of protecting our neck and wrists. As blood passes through these exposed areas, it cools – both as it makes its way into your extremities and returns back into your body. This can work against your other protective gear. Add a shirt with the thumb loops to keep your sleeves down and a neck gaiter to protect the front and back of your neck. This will shield those two contacts points from the wind and cold.

Carold Nelson, one of our newest club members, had a personal best on Spring Lake when he hooked this catfish – his first on a fly – using the balanced leech you see inset. With its black bead head, some additional tinsel tied into the body, and a couple strands of Krystal Flash in the tail, you’ll find this pattern especially deadly on a windy day. Balanced Leeches ride horizontally beneath an indicator. The wind agitates the indicator, activating the fly under the surface.

Finally, I got my fish – biggest and best fish I’ve caught! Dave was netting fish for us and holding them just briefly so we could swiftly release. It was a great day!”

Our comms guy, Ryan May (@edmondsangler), brought this vibrantly colored Pennask Rainbow Trout to the net while fishing on Douglas Lake Ranch in British Columbia June 6th. The Pennask species of trout is known for its aggressive behavior, fighting ability, and tendency to jump when hooked. (In fact, it’s not unheard of for one or two to jump straight into your boat on any given day.) This class is open to the public. You do not need to be a member to participate.

In this six-session class, our experienced instructors guide you through the art of tying classic patterns, useful for catching a wide variety of fish on rivers, lakes, and the Puget Sound. You’ll receive detailed instruction on the fundamentals and select advanced techniques for the following patterns:

Try swinging or stripping larger flies like Clouser Minnows and Delia Squid patterns with sharp hooks and plenty of movement. Keep an eye on river and tide conditions for coho’s tricky behavior, and look for cutthroat on overcast days—their peak hunting time. Club Member Bill Lundin checked in earlier this month south of Omak a ways down the 97 in Okanogan County. He titled his report: The View from Rat Lake.

“I picked this title in homage to John Gierach who passed away October 3 (I was a huge fan of his), and also because it was the lake near Brewster that I fished at today,” Lundin says. “I owe a huge thanks to John Wendt who recommended it to me.”

Lundin said the fishing was excellent! “I HAD THE WHOLE LAKE TO MYSELF! This is a rarity for me,” he says. “Since I was on my own, I wasn't able to compare results with other fishermen. But with a depth finder/fish locator, I eventually found my way.”

“I used a #7 deep sinking line and a 4x tippet with a thin mint fly pattern. The fish were feeding at about 20 to 25 feet, so I tried to keep my fly in that feeding range. I have an electric trolling motor, so I used a s!ow speed along the brush covered banks.”

“The strikes were regular and often. Rainbows were 15 to 16 inches. The tiger trout was 14 inches. I caught and released a lot of fish!”

John Wendt was officially presented with the Pat Herdt Education Award from the Washington State Council of Fly Fishers International (WCSFFI) by Jim Black at our Member Appreciation Event yesterday!

The award recognizes individuals who have made “extraordinary contributions to the education of fly fishers.” As chair of our Education Committee, John’s impact goes far beyond leading the club’s classes and moderating our First Friday Follies.

John generously gives his time, knowledge, and resources to help new and experienced fishers grow in the art and sport of fly fishing. Whether he's mentoring beginners on the water or organizing fly tying events, his dedication and selflessness represent a level of camaraderie you won’t find in any other sport.

His passion for fly fishing is contagious, and we’re so fortunate to have him as part of our club.

Thank you, John, for all you do!

Delicious food and beer. Camaraderie with friends old and new. And some really cool auction and raffle items.
