Remembering John Townsell

We’re deeply saddened to share that our longtime friend and Olympic Fly Fishers of Edmonds member, John Townsell, has passed away.

If you ever met John, you likely remember his smile first. His eyes carried the warmth of it. He had a steady calm about him that put you at ease, a deep, easy voice, and a way of speaking that made you slow down with him. Talking with John felt like talking to someone you’d known for years, even if you’d only just met.

John was one of the most welcoming members of our club. He loved sharing his time and knowledge — whether it was tying a fly, talking through a technique, or pointing someone toward a favorite local water. He was a longtime volunteer at our annual winter fly tying class, where countless new tiers got their start under his patient guidance.

What set John apart was how he made people feel: seen, supported, and valued. When he talked with you, he was fully with you — generous with his wisdom and genuinely interested in your experience on and off the water.

We will miss his kindness, his depth of expertise, and the quiet, steady way he helped shape the heart of our club. This winter, when we gather for our fly tying class, we’ll feel the empty space where his warmth and steady presence have reliably been for so many years.

We miss you, John. (And we brought this beauty to the net on Lone Lake today in your honor.)

He will be our guest speaker tonight November 11, 2025, from 6 to 8 pm at Lake Ballinger Center.

Vince’s presentation, “Winter Euro Nymphing in Western Washington,” offers a clear, practical look at one of the most effective cold-season techniques in fly fishing. Designed for anglers of all levels, the session will walk through how to rig, read water, and present flies for consistent success during December, January, and February—when most rods are gathering dust.

Since being bit by the Euro (tight-line) nymphing bug in 2020, Vince has spent the past five years immersed in perfecting this method for Western Washington’s diverse rivers. Drawing from global tactics and countless hours on the water, he’ll show how subtle changes in setup and presentation can make all the difference when winter flows run cold and clear. Expect a lively, hands-on talk filled with real-world advice you can put to use right away.

🍁🎣Lone Lake – Part 2: Fish, Flies & Fall Camaraderie

Lone Lake delivered a fitting finale to what will likely be our last stillwater outing before winter weather shuts everything down. The fishing required patience, but the day was rich with learning, color, and a few standout moments.

Throughout the day, those broken, textured clouds kept shifting overhead — dramatic streaks and layered patterns that showed up in nearly every photo taken from the water.

GREG & OTTO – Greg’s grandson, Otto, hooked two trout and had several more strikes—including a brief showdown with the fish he dubbed “Walter” (a.k.a. “Big Jim”). The winning fly was the White Langley Leech, tied by Greg. With that many hits, Otto easily could’ve tallied five or six fish.

JEN – Jen went two-for-two with very different presentations: one trout came out of the north shallows on a nymph suspended beneath a dry—classic stillwater sight-indicator setup—and the second, brighter fish inhaled an orange-and-yellow booby-eye fly stripped with short pulses.

IRENE – Irene connected with her first fish within 15 minutes—luck some of us half-jokingly attributed to her stylish new haircut, though it’s likely more to do with her steady, confident presentations. Two fish landed on green flies along the east shore, with a third solid hit she just missed.

DAN – November surprise: Dan hooked into bass. Not trout—bass! A bunch of them. An unexpected twist for November, but a solid afternoon of learning lake structure and dialing in float-tube handling.

Weeds on the east end made things tough, pushing us into deeper lanes down the middle or toward the south end. Trout concentrated along weed edges in roughly 8–12 feet, responding best to sinking lines paired with darker leeches and buggers.

A very Whidbey bonus: Bill Lundin even spotted orca spouts from the highway off-ramp on the way in—just a flash, but enough to remind us how special these waters are.

Yesterday’s outing at Lone Lake delivered exactly what a late-autumn stillwater day should: quiet water, crisp air, and those broken, textured clouds that half the group kept stopping to photograph. With winter weather moving in fast, this was likely our lake-season closer — and Lone offered up a fitting send-off.

The morning arrived calm and glassy. Sunlight filtered through the haze and painted the shoreline gold, giving us that rare mirror-flat surface that only appears a few days each year before cold fronts and storms settle in. Anglers launched around 10am and drifted into the stillness, pontoons and tubes cutting clean lines across the water.

Fall color still held along the shore — bright yellows tucked against dark evergreens — and the lake mirrored everything back with perfect symmetry: trees, clouds, reflections, and the soft shift of birds overhead.

Before launch, a couple of local residents stopped by to offer friendly advice on flies, lines, and depth. Their suggestions — “green leeches, slow and steady… fish are hanging around ten feet” — set a helpful, collaborative tone for the day. Whidbey hospitality at its best!

By mid-morning the sun had climbed, and the first fish stories started carrying across the water. Part 2 captures the action, the surprises, and everything that unfolded once the fishing kicked in — but the morning alone was worth the trip.

River Season Closer — North Fork Stillaguamish (Oct 18)

A quiet, moody wrap to our 2025 river season yesterday morning. Fall color lined the banks, gray skies held until early afternoon, and we managed five good hours before the rain arrived right on cue at 1 p.m.

The river ran relatively clear but dark—cool in the low 50s °F. It fished tough. Kieran and Ryan each brought a pink to hand, with a few extra taps. We saw good trout, but most were hunkered down and territorial, more focused on guarding their space from the pinks than feeding. Eagles wheeled overhead, and deer moved through the woods and underbrush along the banks. The smell of late fall was everywhere—wet leaves and damp forest.

Flies in our rotation today: Reverse Spiders, soft hackles, and small leeches.

Takeaway: When salmon fill the system and trout turn defensive, shorter swings, longer hangs, and smaller profiles can make a difference. As Kieran pointed out: changes like this are also a way to appreciate the rhythm of the seasons. 🍂

So after multiple outings on the Sauk, Snoqualmie, Skagit, and Stillaguamish this year, we’re marking it well fished! 🐟

And because no day of fly fishing—local or otherwise—is complete without good food: on the way home, Ryan stopped at @nuttysjunkyard and had one of the best burger-and-fries he’s had in a long time. River Season Closer — North Fork Stillaguamish (Oct 18)

A quiet, moody wrap to our 2025 river season yesterday morning. Fall color lined the banks, gray skies held until early afternoon, and we managed five good hours before the rain arrived right on cue at 1 p.m.

The river ran relatively clear but dark—cool in the low 50s °F. It fished tough. Kieran and Ryan each brought a pink to hand, with a few extra taps. We saw good trout, but most were hunkered down and territorial, more focused on guarding their space from the pinks than feeding. Eagles wheeled overhead, and deer moved through the woods and underbrush along the banks. The smell of late fall was everywhere—wet leaves and damp forest.

Flies in our rotation today: Reverse Spiders, soft hackles, and small leeches.

Takeaway: When salmon fill the system and trout turn defensive, shorter swings, longer hangs, and smaller profiles can make a difference. As Kieran pointed out: changes like this are also a way to appreciate the rhythm of the seasons. 🍂

So after multiple outings on the Sauk, Snoqualmie, Skagit, and Stillaguamish this year, we’re marking it well fished! 🐟

And because no day of fly fishing—local or otherwise—is complete without good food: on the way home, Ryan stopped at @nuttysjunkyard and had one of the best burger-and-fries he’s had in a long time. What a day! With the sun streaming through the windows and rods being test-cast on the back lawn, more than 70 Olympic Fly Fishers gathered on Sunday for one of our favorite events of the year — our Annual Member Appreciation Party and Fundraiser.

First, a huge thank-you to our president, Greg Sisson, for the countless hours of planning, donation-soliciting, and gear organizing that made the day such a success. As always, his leadership and energy were the backbone of the entire event.

📣 Highlights from the day:

• Burke Bruttig brought the laughs with fish-flavored dad jokes and movie trivia as our spirited Master of Ceremonies.

• Jim Black, our FFI Certified Casting Instructor, was honored as Member of the Year for the countless hours he devotes to teaching members both basic and advanced casting. Jim is one of the pillars of our club!

• Ryan May received the Fly Fishers International Bill Mackay Conservation Award for his ongoing leadership in conservation and habitat stewardship.

🍕 Special thanks to @perrinvillepizza for the delicious artisan pizzas and salads, and to Emily Disbennett for organizing the food and beverages and serving up the beer and wine. A big shout-out as well to Mirin Dewar for her help throughout the event, and for calling raffle winners with patience, poise, enthusiasm, and a smile.

We’re also grateful to Mike Truax (on behalf of Bill McDonald), George and Linda Selvy, Dave Skaar, John Wendt, Dennis Potter, and Paul Lesh for their generous support — and to every member who donated gear, tied flies, crafted nets, or volunteered their time. The creativity, innovation, and craftsmanship in this club are unmatched — and it’s a big part of what makes days like this so special.

Together we pulled out a huge pile of invasives and tucked in our young plants for winter, laying a full fresh bed of mulch across the entire planting area at the edge of the picnic grounds.

Picnic Point Creek was running low and slow in the tall grass with the lack of rain. Yet earlier this month, it met Puget Sound during a bull tide—right as the pink salmon run came to a close. It was a vivid reminder of why this work matters: keeping the creek and shoreline healthy for fish, birds, and all the life that depends on these waters (us included!).

💚 We’re grateful to club members Bill Lundin, Irene Mitchell, and OFF's Conservation Chair Helena Puche, and to community friends Paul, Mickie, and Conrad, who joined us on the beach and helped make quick work of a big job.

Earlier this year, we installed nearly 90 native plants along the shoreline at Picnic Point Beach. Now it’s time to prepare them for the winter. For this event, we’re planning to clear any grass and weeds that are crowding the young plants and re-mulch to help retain moisture and protect them during the winter months. Time permitting, we’ll also pick up litter and clear invasive species such as blackberry or ivy.

A healthy, wooded beach, rich with native vegetation, will cool stream temperatures, provide habitat for birds and fish, and slow erosion.

We’ll be joined by our friends from the Snohomish County Healthy Forest Project and Picnic Point Forest Stewards.

Please help us continue to restore and improve one of our area’s most vital marine habitats!

This event is open to the public. All ages and levels of ability are welcome. Tools and all other necessary materials will be provided.

Earlier this year, we installed nearly 90 native plants along the shoreline at Picnic Point Beach. Now it’s time to prepare them for the winter. For this event, we’re planning to clear any grass and weeds that are crowding the young plants and re-mulch to help retain moisture and protect them during the winter months. Time permitting, we’ll also pick up litter and clear invasive species such as blackberry or ivy.

A healthy, wooded beach, rich with native vegetation, will cool stream temperatures, provide habitat for birds and fish, and slow erosion.

We’ll be joined by our friends from the Snohomish County Healthy Forest Project and Picnic Point Forest Stewards.

Please help us continue to restore and improve one of our area’s most vital marine habitats!

🌲 Greider Lakes Backcountry Report – Part 1 🌲

Before heading in for cataract surgery, OFF member @caroldnelson made time for one last adventure. And he went big: a backcountry trip into the Greider Lakes. Photos keep rolling in from last weekend’s outing—and what a day it was. Just about everyone got into fish: wild, scrappy rainbows and cutthroat that ran anywhere from 2 to 10 inches. Not giants, but all heart.

We covered a lot of ground—through the woods, over boulders, and along bend after bend of beautiful water. Riffles, pockets, seams… you name it. The scenery was nonstop: shaded slots, emerald green pools that were impossible to resist (they didn’t always fish, but what a setting!), and big mountain views around every corner.

Top flies included Pat’s Rubber Legs, Prince Nymphs, and classic dries like Stimulators. Several folks also found success drifting or swinging black ant patterns, especially tight to the banks and soft seams where fish were rising low.

One note for future trips—this riverbed is all shapes and sizes. Everything from football-sized rocks to car-sized boulders. It made for some tricky wading but also gave us high-ground casting spots and room to scout out the water ahead.

All fish were released safely, and everyone came away with stories. Big thanks again to the group that made it out—this one’s already a club favorite.

Some of us hiked 20 to 30 minutes into the woods, others pushed up or downstream in search of pocket water. Nearly everyone got into fish.

Not pictured in the group shot: George and Kieran. George headed down to the water straight away and Kieran was already well upriver… after turning up at 5:45am!

🎣 The day’s catch ranged from spirited 2-inchers to chunky 10-inch rainbow and cutthroat trout, with most falling in the sweet spot between 5 and 7 inches. Not a numbers game—this was about wild fish in wild water on an idyllic summer day.

To be fair, it wasn’t always easy—boulder scrambles, technical casts, and wader-soaked crossings—but the rewards were real.

A huge thank-you to everyone who showed up and made the day what it was! Exploring unfamiliar water takes a certain mindset—curious, patient, and up for a little adventure. You brought all of that and more. The laughs and conversations, the shared resources and tips, the quiet moments on the riverbank... that’s what really sticks after the memory of the fish you caught fades.

We had a great turnout for Saturday’s conservation event—nearly 20 volunteers, including a crew from the UW Foster School of Business completing their service requirement.

New member James F. Chang and his daughter Michelle joined us too—Michelle’s favorite part of the day? “The cutting!” (We were trimming back grass around our young plants, and she went all in!)

Justin and Renee Pelan also showed up in a big way— Justin Pelan recently relocated to the area and has already been chasing trout on the Cedar River while picking up the sport.

🌧️ The weather was misty but held off just long enough—we got the last plant mulched just before a proper downpour hit at noon.

💪 We moved a serious amount of mulch over the bridge and into the restoration area, tucking in our native plants with cardboard and bark to help them thrive this summer. We also cleared weeds, picked up loads of trash, and left the beach better than we found it.

🐾 Friendly reminder for beachgoers: If you're walking your dog, please pack out used waste bags—leaving them behind in the bushes just means someone else has to handle it later. Let’s keep it clean for everyone!

Bonus moment: we shared the shoreline with a wedding crew setting up for their 2PM ceremony. Huge congrats to the happy couple! 💍

Thanks to the fantastic turnout at our last event, we installed nearly 90 native plants including Tall Oregon Grape, Black Twinberry, Mock Orange, Red-flowering Currant, Salal, Shore Pine, Snowberry, Sword Fern, and Vine Maple.

This time, we’ll clear grass and weeds that are crowding the young plants and spread mulch to help retain moisture and protect them during upcoming summer temperatures. Time permitting, we’ll also pick up litter and clear invasive species such as blackberry or ivy.

A healthy, wooded beach, rich with native vegetation, will cool stream temperatures, provide habitat for birds and fish, and slow erosion.

Representatives from the Snohomish County Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will be on site, along with Picnic Point Forest Stewards and members of Olympic Fly Fishers of Edmonds.

Stillwater Success at Lone Lake! 🛶☀️

We couldn’t have asked for a better day for our club’s lake fishing clinic yesterday. Under sunny skies and calm water, a great group of new stillwater anglers joined mentors Tom Langley, Dennis Potter, and Greg Sisson for a hands-on workshop covering gear, boat setup, trolling techniques, and more.

Tom kicked things off with a shoreline session on reading lake water, then we hit the water where everyone landed fish—including Amy Phillips, who caught one on her own hand-tied fly after sailing through our Beginning Fly Tying class this past winter!

🎉 Special shoutout to Justin, fresh from Ohio, for getting his first fish in his new boat. 🎣
